Many people hated Microsoft's decision to take away the start menu in return for a metro UI interface. If I was using this on a touchscreen tablet or PC, I would appreciate it, but for a PC with a keyboard and mouse, it is obnoxious. You have a combination of UI apps that are optimized for touch, and a combination of desktop apps. Thankfully, there is one program you can get called StartIsBack. It is a start menu that looks and feels like Windows 7! Yes, there are positives for Windows 8 and 8.1, being that low power components can run this UI with no issue, due to the optimization for these devices. Therefore, running the PC faster and more optimized, overall keeping it at better performance, without performance bottle necks.
StartIsBack is the best start menu for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. I tried Start8's start menu, and it doesn't work as seamless as StartIsBack. It seems like it runs as a program or application itself, whereas StartIsBack runs alongside Windows. Using Start8, I would see some noticeable lag, and doing simple tasks such as putting my computer to sleep would take 10 seconds for it to recognize. Not with StartIsBack. It works seamlessly, and it does actions quickly. You can choose how it looks, and customize it to your liking.

That's a lot of options to choose from! Now if you do want to go back to the regular UI, you can just press CTRL and WINDOWS key. You can obviously change it to whatever hotkeys you like, but those are at default. Also, on the start menu, it will have a button to click to go there as well, called 'Start Menu', even though I'm not really sure you would want to go back to the Metro UI interface if you have a PC with a keyboard and mouse.
Now one reason to get StartIsBack over Start8 is the price. StartIsBack for 1 PC is $2.99, for 2 PCs is $4.99, and for 5 PCs is $9.99. Trust me, spend this $3, it will be the best three bucks you spent on your PC. However, Start 8 starts at $4.99, and increases in that price for how much you buy. So, StartIsBack is cheaper in however you look at it. And it works much better too!
